London, 1945: Karl Popper published his famous anti-totalitarian work "The Open Society and Its Enemies". Totalitarianism, a "Closed Society", which is according to Popper essentially tribal, is presented in my drawing as a thumbtack. I use this cheap and very popular pushpin as a symbol of the threat to freedom and democracy, to stress the fact that totalitarian ideas used to have great appeal among huge masses of people.
