Europe, 1940: My image of a goddess of war is my version of a Rembrandt's oil painting, "Bellona", from 1633. "Bellona" was an Ancient Roman war goddess and in Rembrandt's painting she has a sword, helmet and a shield bearing the head of Medusa in relief. Medusa's horrible face with snakes-hair is counterbalancing Bellona's amiable and for me even funny face, maybe because Rembrandt used his wife, Saskia, as model. And Saskia's face is so benevolent, that I can hardly imagine that she thinks about war and warriors. My Bellona is armless (no arms, no weapons, only a snake on her side) and looks amiable and even funny, as Rembrandt's goddess.
