Zurich, 1937: Alban Berg's unfinished opera "Lulu" was posthumously premiered (Berg died in 1935). The opera is based on Frank Wedekind's plays "Erdgeist" (Earth Spirit) and "Die Büchse der Pandora" (Pandora's Box). In the prologue of the opera, Lulu is introduced as a snake. In my drawing I put the accent on Lulu’s instinctively fight for her place under the sun; she has the body of a butterfly and the legs of a spider. They say that some butterfly species undertake long migrations to wintering grounds that they have never seen. Pure instinct, that's Lulu! As for legs of a spider, they remind us that Lulu's seductive charm could lead men into dangerous situations.
