New York, 1936: The fight between Max Schmeling, the former heavyweight world champion, and Joe Louis, unbeaten heavyweight boxer, was the most sensational political event in boxing history. For the audience from all the world, Schmeling was white and represented Nazi Germany, and Louis was black and represented "free" America. Schmeling was better, knocking Louis out in round 12. Two years later, in a rematch, Louis defeated Schmeling in the first round. Both matches we can see today on youtube, and we can read a lot of articles about these great boxers and their friendship outside the ring, which endured until Louis' death in 1981.
