Madrid, 1931: Federico Garcia Lorca was appointed Director of a travelling student theatre group "La Barraca", sponsored by new Republican government. They toured the countryside giving free performances of the Spanish classics on public squares. There is a photograph taken during a tour in the hills of La Alpujarra, in 1932; Lorca, standing in front of a Y-shaped tree in a small village, called Pitres. According to Carlos Pranger and his beautiful story of this event, Lorca has sent a letter to his friend, poet Jorge Guillén with words: "Here I am in Pitres, a village with no voice, or pigeons from the mountains, crucified on the Y of the tree."
