Berlin, 1930: The premiere of Josef von Sternberg's film "Der blaue Engel" (The Blue Angel), starring Marlene Dietrich and Emil Jannings. The film is based on Heinrich Mann's novel "Professor Unrat". The story concerns a professor at a High School who discovers that some of his students have been attending night performances at a cabaret where the talents of the beautiful Lola Lola have captivated the boys’ imaginations. With indignation, the professor tries to stop the boys from attending such performances only to discover that himself has become enslaved by the cabaret singer’s charms so much so that he himself becomes a creature of her will and fancy which causes his degradation and death.
