Berlin, 1928: The premiere of Bertolt Brecht's play "Die Dreigroschenoper" (The Threepenny Opera), with the music by Kurt Weill. This music drama was adapted from "The Beggar's Opera" by John Gay, premiered in London in 1728. Brecht and Weill’s masterpiece soon became world famous ("The Ballad of Mack the Knife" is one of the best known songs in the 20th Century – versions by Louis Armstrong, Bobby Darin, Frank Sinatra etc.). Philosopher Ernst Bloch recommended the song of Pirate Jenny as a national anthem, because that music is halfway between a cathedral and a bar. I suggest you to see on Youtube famous Hildegard Knef's interpretation of "Pirate Jenny" (Seeräuber Jenny) in German.
