Berlin, 1926: The premiere of Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau’s "Faust". This silent film is based on Goethe’s and Marlow’s tragedies, with Swedish actor Gösta Ekman in the title role and Emil Jannings as Mephisto. The film is considered as one of the most visually beautiful black and white films ever. Some scenes remind us on Caravaggio's chiaroscuro paintings and other looks as Dürer i Bruegel painted them by black and white colours. Carl Hoffman’s camera and art direction of Robert Herlth and Walter Röhrig contributed in making this visual masterpiece of German cinematography. My vision is based on the original film poster, but now with Mephisto as a powerful miner who can bring helpless Faust with him into the darkness of a deep mine or into the light of Sun, whenever he wants.
