Frankfurt am Main, 1923: Paul Hindemith, who acted as concertmaster of the Frankfurter Museumsorchester from 1915, composed his Sonata for Solo Cello op.25 No.3. I think the melancholy in my painting, disturbed by threatening red cactus, is quite appropriate to somber mood, with some aggressive parts, in Hindemith’s Sonata. As for Hindemoth, it’s well known that Joseph Goebbels called him in a public speech in 1934 "atonalen Geräuschemacher" (an atonal noisemaker). Knowing the Third Reich’s negative attitude toward modern art, it was a great compliment.
