Vienna, 1923: Sigmund Freud published "Das Ich und das Es" (Ego and Id). To emphasize the division between the conscious and unconscious, Freud introduced new terms: id, ego and superego. As I have understood, "Id" is unconscious desires of a baby, "ego" is conscious reaction of a child to the real world, and "superego" is built from moral values implemented by parents and society. The selfish needs of the "id" are always in conflict with the idealistic demands of the "superego". Our "ego" must be able to solve these conflicts; otherwise we'll have a neurotic disorder.
