Petrograd (St Petersburg), 1920: The model of the Monument to the Third International, by Vladimir Tatlin, was exhibited. Unfortunately, this unbelievable structure of iron, glass and steel, with rotating spaces inside, spiralling up to 400 m, was never built. The inspirations maybe derive from the 9th Century "The Malwiya minaret", Samarra, Iraq, or "The Leaning Tower" of Pisa from 1173. Pieter Bruegel the Elder made his famous painting, "The Tower of Babel", in 1563. The Eiffel tower from 1889 is an unavoidable example of a beautiful tower, but its pure symmetry makes the tower less dramatic compering with Tatlin’s. One very interesting idea was "Design for a Memorial" by Swiss artist Hermann Obrist, from 1895; it has the same, surprisingly unbalanced masses, but it is not so transparent and light as Tatlin’s masterpiece.
