USA, 1920: Alcohol prohibition began on January 16, 1920, when the National Prohibition Act, called "the Volstead Act", went into effect. Alcohol was accused of being the main evil in society and the cause of most social problems. After 13 years, it was obvious that the biggest results of the Prohibition were the development of the black market and rise of organised crime. As Emma Goldman said: "Prohibition being itself abnormal, it succeeds but in creating an abnormal life". Groucho Marx : "I have never had a drink before January 16, 1920"...With the advent of Prohibition, I came to the conclusion that if it was illegal, there must be something to it that I never discovered." For the end, a nice sentence from Ken Hubbard: "Prohibition is better than no liquor at all".
