Berlin, 1916; Max Reinhardt directed the play "Dantos Tod" (Danton’s Death) written by Georg Büchner in 1835. Although the play was premiered in 1902, in Berlin, only Reinhardt’s production with its avant-garde cinematographic montage, lights and sounds, will make Büchner’s masterpiece world famous. As for my stage design for Danton’s time, I put the crowd up in the air, to stress the fact that in moments of execution by guillotine, everybody waits just for one thing: the fall of the heavy blade.
