Munich, 1911: Wassily Kandinsky, Franz Marc, Alfred Kubin, Gabriele Münter, August Macke, Paul Klee, Marianne von Verefkin and Alexei von Yavlensky founded an expressionist group "Der Blaue Reiter". They all believed that task of art is not to reflect the material world around us, but to express instead our "inner mind". The harmony of colors and shapes is able to speak to viewers intuitively. "Are not children more creative in drawing directly from the secret of their sensation than the imitator of Greek forms?" says August Macke. Wassily Kandinsky was the first one who made the next step: he left the material world around him and entered the field of abstract art.
