Berlin, 1903: Georg Simmel’s essays “The Metropolis and Mental Life” was published. According to Simmel, if we reacted emotionally to every contact with innumerable people in a big city, we would be mentally destroyed. That’s why the metropolitan type of man (which, of course, exists in a thousand individual variants) reacts with his head instead of his heart. Because I live in a two-million city it happened sometimes that some of those two million people are not polite to me. In this cases I used to say to myself: Don’t take it emotionally, think of Simmel!
