Moscow, 1902: The premier of Maxim Gorky’s play “The Lower Depths”, directed by Konstantin Stanislavsky at the MHAT Theatre (Moscow Art Theatre). In 1903 Max Reinhardt will produce “The Lower Depths” in Kleines Theater in Berlin. Inspired by Gorky’s play, Jean Renoir will make a film with the same title in 1936, and Akira Kurosawa in 1957.
